New Goji Study Makes International Headlines

Back in 2003, FreeLife® made headlines with the introduction of Himalayan Goji® Juice, the healthy and delicious functional beverage that started the goji revolution. Seven years later, Himalayan Goji Juice is still making headlines, thanks to exciting new research showing even greater promise for optimal health and wellness.

On February 1, 2010, London’s venerable Daily Express newspaper reported the results of Australian research studying the effects of ultraviolet rays on mice. It is well known that overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can suppress immunity, and that is what makes sun worshippers more susceptible to skin cancer. University of Sydney researchers set out to see if goji, a known immune enhancer, might be able to counteract the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.

The mice in the study were divided into two groups: the “Goji Group” was given Himalayan Goji Juice mixed into their drinking water; and the “Control Group” received either apple or pear juice in their drinking water. After UV exposure, the mice in the Control Group developed sunburn, which was accompanied by inflammation and edema (swelling and fluid retention) just like you would have if you had been a bit careless about sunbathing without enough sunscreen.

But what happened to the mice in the Goji Group? As reported in the Express article, “the inflammatory sunburn reaction was strongly reduced.” And this was with just 5 percent goji juice mixed into their water!

According to lead researcher (and FreeLife Scientific Advisory Board member) Dr. Vivienne Reeve, goji’s action is two-fold. It protects against decreased immune response, and it also increases the body’s antioxidant power so that it is better able to mop up the dangerous free radicals that are generated after UV exposure.

Dr. Reeve’s groundbreaking study will be published in the upcoming issue of the respected peer-reviewed journal Photochemical and Photobiological Sciences, a publication of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Animal studies cannot guarantee identical results in humans, but they are an important first step. Dr. Reeve believes that “goji berry juice might prove useful in susceptible humans.”

Freelife Endorser Meachem Catches his Championship

Wide receiver Robert Meachem realized a lifelong dream on February 7, 2010 when he and his New Orleans teammates upset Indianapolis to win professional football’s World Championship.

The game itself was one of the most exciting Championship contests in league history, featuring a dramatic come-from-behind effort by New Orleans and electrifying plays on both sides of the ball. Robert made a couple of key receptions, one of which extended a late drive, to help his team go ahead midway through the fourth quarter. He delivered his gutsy performance in the most-watched program in U.S. television history. The telecast of the game boasted more than 106 million viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.

FreeLife® has been a long-time supporter of Robert, who drinks both GoChi® and Chi3 Energy™ as a part of his fitness regimen.

Robert’s journey to stardom is an impressive story. A graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Meachem was named a high school All-American by Parade magazine and SuperPrep reporting services. He accepted a football scholarship at the University of Tennessee, where he garnered rave reviews, and had what was considered his breakout year in 2006, earning an all-Southeast Conference honors and a consensus All-America selection.

Icing on the Cake:

Robert Meachem’s season that ended with a Championship began with the “Play of the Year.” In Week 1 of the season, Robert stole the ball from a Washington defender who had just made an interception, and took it all the way for a touchdown. That was designated “Play of the Year” by one of the league’s corporate sponsors.

On the Other Side of the Ball

New Orleans players Robert Meachem and Paul Spicer, a defensive end, were not the only Freelife endorsers to suit up on super Sunday. On the other side of the ball was Indianapolis cornerback Tim Jennings. While Tim did not leave the field victorious, he did make a highlight-film tackle, stopping New Orleans running back Pierre Thomas just short of the goal line.

While they are opponents on the football field, those three FreeLife endorsers agree on at least one thing: All are huge advocates of GoChi.

2 Years, 2 Championships with FreeLife

This year it was FreeLife endorsers Robert Meachem and Paul Spicer who hoisted the trophy for the city of New Orleans. Last year, Pittsburgh enjoyed a Championship with the spotlight on its brilliant defensive back and FreeLife endorser, Ryan Clark. Starting to see a pattern of performance here?
